September Meetup Roundup
New families, new games… it was a busy September meetup at the San Marcos Public Library last week. Turnout was excellent, and even included a visit from local game retailers and friends of the group Childs’ Play!
Games in progress were a big part of the day. David continues to refine his upgrade of the 1978 classic Sopwith. He’s adjusting the rules, upgrading the pieces, and thinking about showing it off in some other venues soon. Everyone seems to enjoy this game a lot when it comes out, so good luck with it, David!
I also had a chance to try out a board game prototype I’ve been working on for a while. It’s a simple push-your-luck game, and seemed to go over pretty well. I was a little worried when two of the players got a slow start, but the luck evened out and everyone was battling for the win at the end.
Since the biggest problems were teaching the game on the small test board, I’m almost ready to upgrade to larger prototype and see if I’ve really found the fun in the design. You may be seeing the next version at our October library meetup.
Prototype were just a part of our September meetup, too. There were several favorites hitting the table, including Love Letter, Dominion, Ticket to Ride, and Takenoko. This last game seems to have really taken off with the group. It looks great on the table — bamboo pieces and an adorable panda for the win! — and it seems to have just the right amount of strategy and conflict for our players.
Overall, it was a great meetup. October looks to be busy as well, with a convention coming up, three game nights scheduled at the Hungry Gamer, and our regular library meetup on Sunday the 26th. See you there!
